Sydney, Australia, February 2020. CM Partnerships Director and Principal Researcher Mr. Juan Navarro presented his most recent research on competition policy to the business leaders from the 21 APEC economies during their first 2020 meeting in Sydney, Australia. Navarro’s report aims to contribute to the understanding of competition policy provisions in the context of next-generation Free Trade Agreements occurring in the Asia Pacific that might have a meaningful impact on business success by providing innovative and comprehensive solutions to key trade and investment issues that are imperative to be addressed by APEC economies. Competition policy provisions from six trade pacts were analyzed by Navarro to complete this report, namely, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP); the Canada, United States and Mexico agreement (CUSMA); and four other agreements among the European Union and Asia-Pacific economies.

Over this international gathering, Navarro had the opportunity to engage with business leaders and authorities from all across the Asia-Pacific such as Dr. Rebecca Sta Maria, APEC executive director, the Consul General of Canada in Australia, Hon. Angela Bogdan and Dato Rohana Tan Sri Mahmood, ABAC chair 2020 and who is a very successful businessperson from Malaysia. Navarro was chosen by the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) as the most qualified researcher to complete this important report for this leading organization that represents the official voice from the private sector in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). To be noted, Navarro’s report received the plenary endorsement, which means it will be submitted in the next weeks to the analysis and consideration of the SOM Chair Mr. Hairil Yahri Yaacob, deputy secretary-general of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry from Malaysia, which is the host economy for APEC 2020.

APEC is composed of a group of 21 economies including Canada whose primary goal is to support sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.
